In the other side of the coin Bologna is not called "La Grassa" but the Green. Bologna is rich in Park and green areas. During the hot days they can also be the oasis to provide you with shadow but also as relax area or place to do sports.
Giardini Margherita, Piazza di Porta Santo Stefano. It is the largest and certainly the most popular park in the city, located just south of the city centre. Inside the park there is a small lake and a huge variety of trees and let’s not forget about the famous Chalet dei Giardini Margherita, a club in the middle of the whole garden. During Wednesday or weekends the park is full of people enjoying the sun or having picnic. It is also the favorite place for the Erasmus students. During late spring and autumn, if you keep an eye on the events that take place in Giardini Margherita you will see that there will be numerous yoga activities, tai chi, gymnastics and many more outdoor activities. Make sure that you check WelcomeBologna http://www.bolognawelcome.com/en/ website for more information about the upcoming events.
Parco Montagnola, Via Irnerio. Has a base that contains the ruins of the Castle of Galliera (Castello di Galliera) from the 14th century. In the middle of the park you will find the sculpture of a lion made by Diego Sarty in the late 19th century. In the Saturdays, until late afternoon, parco Montagnola becomes home of a market called “Mercato di Montagnola”, this market consists in stands placed by autonomous sellers selling everything from clothes to gadgets at a significantly low price. The market extends that much that it covers all the Piazza VIII Agosto which is beside the park. During spring and summer time it becomes an oasis for the locals and tourists because it is really close to the city centre and the central train station. There are also many free-entry events organised for the summer period. During July and August, here it takes place Montagnola Summer festival compound of Jazz concerts almost every evening/night, as it is an open area, there is no fee. Talon Park, Via Panoramica, Casalecchio di Reno. You can reach it with the bus number 20, direction Casalecchio Marconi from bus stop VI Agosto and getting down in Casalecchio Marconi. You don’t have to buy any special bus ticket. The park is really big and covers a great walk close to river Reno. I know, I know… you were wondering where is the river :). It is also a great place for a small excursion, not that far from the city. If you are fan of trekking but you want a fast option this park is the best for you. It has a path, not so famous, that drives to the famous church of San Luca. The nature around is beautiful and the atmosphere really calm.
The panorama of San Michele in Bosco. Is a religious complex on the hills of Bologna, the church was destroyed in 1430 and reconstructed in 1523. The complex was also a home for the King of Italy maybe because of the beautiful panorama over the city of Bologna. To reach the church you can take the bus number 30 from the bus stop Piazza Minghetti (direction San Michele in Bosco) and you will get down, obviously, at the bus stop San Michele in Bosco which is the last one, you will arrive there in about 10 minutes. If you have a passion for walking you can also walk uphill to the church as there is a pedestrian way on the side of the street. There are no entrance fees, but the access to the panorama is guaranteed only during daytime.

Parco di Via dei Giardini, Via dei Giardini.
Is a relatively small park, but with beautiful views, the park is located outside the city or better said at the “periferia” and it has a little lake in its middle. To arrive at the park you can take the bus number 27 from the center, bus stop Rizzoli for around 20 minutes and you will get down in the bus stop Lipparini.

Villa Ghigi, Via San Mamolo, 105. Is a quiet place where you can enjoy your picnic or socialise with your friends in a more particular area. The villa was built in the beginning of 1600 and in 1874 it was bought by Callisto Ghici and it stood in the family until 1972. After an agreement between the Municipality of Bologna and the family of Ghigi the decision was that the green area of the villa to be public space (park alike) dependent on the Municipality of Bologna. The villa Ghigi is no longer inhabited. Sometimes there are some events but considering is quite away from the center, keep an eye on their website for further information about the events:http://www.fondazionevillaghigi.it/
