Congratulations, you have been accepted... And just like that, with that simple sentence your life is about to change. Each of us has faced the trouble of knowing what we want from life, or what we actually want to do for the moment and when we finally discover that, it is not that easy to go for it or achieve it. After searching for different kind of volunteering, interships, part-time jobs and still waiting for that simple but very important sentence, you feel like “that is it, I am giving up”.. But it is that specific moment, when you are about to reach the rock bottom when the wonderful turn occurs and you are back again to feeling motivated, inspired, full of ideas and most importantly feeling again that you can do it. Being part of this kind of volunteering, when you have to travel abroad and be surrounded by totally strangers, new places to explore, new cultures to embrace, it all feels so unreal, so amazing, so this, so that.. But what you need to know before signing for all of this is that you need to prepare yourself for a roller coaster full of different kind of emotions. At first you will basically feel like “Alice in Wonderland” or at least this is how I felt.. Everything is new, people looking so cheerful, different kind of food for you to try, amazing buildings to visit, each day a different activity. But with all of that come the mixed feelings and the idea that you do not belong here/there. You start to question yourself about the decision you made. Even the smallest things will start to bother you.. You will feel like you are taking all of this for granted, and that will make you feel even more sad.. But hey, you.. take a deep breath, get yourself a cup of hot cholocate and listen to what I have got to say. YOU are a strong, independent person. You decided to do this because you know that staying always in your comfortable bouble is not what you are supposed to do. YOU decided to give the best gift to yourself, the gift of exploring, growing, achieving and changing. Yes you will feel down, but after that you`ll feel cheered up. Yes you might miss the people you left behind, but you will meet wonderful, enthusiastic and very unique people whenever you go. Yes you will feel like this is a bad decision, but when the people will thank you for you contribution, your selflessness and your ability to do good, you will forget about everything and you will feel like you belong there. Because being able to volunteer, being able to help people even though it is not being asked from you.. Well believe me when I say, that that is the greatest blessing.
